Consultation on Landlord Registration Scheme Launched

20 July 2008

Communities Minister Stewart Maxwell today announced new measures which he hopes will “streamline” the Landlord Registration Scheme.

It has been illegal for private landlords to let property without applying to their local authority to be registered under the Landlord Registration Scheme since April 2006 and landlords who break this law can face having their rental income withheld or a fine of up to £5,000. The Scottish Government is now seeking feedback from interested parties, including private landlords, on a range of issues including proposals to change the structure of registration fees and the types of landlords which should be exempt from the scheme. The consultation is open until 10 October 2008.
