The Scottish Referendum - young voters
16 September 2014
Apart from the outcome of the Scottish Referendum itself, history will be made on 18th September 2014.
For the first time, under-18s will be casting their vote and having their say in the outcome.
This will be the first national electoral event at which young people aged 16 and 17 will be able to vote.
For students, there were the usual arrangements whereby students could register at either or both their home address and their term time address. Of course, a student registered to vote at either of two places must only vote once at the Referendum.
For those aged 16 and 17, special arrangements have also been made to ensure that the young person can be on the electoral register.
To protect their identity on the register, it is completely confidential and is not available for viewing, supply or purchase.
There will be no dates of birth against entries on the polling list at polling places as all the voters appearing on the register will be of voting age.
The full polling list will be made available only to Counting Officers for use at the Referendum count.
A total of 4,285,323 people have registered to vote in the referendum and the total includes 109,533 people under 18. The numbers in each local authority can be seen here:-

It remains to be seen how a generation of younger voters will affect the outcome of the Referendum.
However, even the inclusion of young people in this crucial electoral event will make history.
